We’re a very active family and so we love active travel vacations
When we’re travelling, we like to make sure that we’re always moving and getting outdoors as much as we can. Before having kids, adventure vacations were easier, of course, when all we had to worry about were our own two feet. But, having the kids along for the adventure is rewarding in itself. Having a family hasn’t diminished our wanderlust, if anything it’s enhanced it. We’ve logged a fair number of outdoor-oriented adventure, and there is so much more that we dream of experiencing. We’re big believers of staying healthy and getting our blood pumping. Hiking is our go-to when we are traveling and need the pick-me-up that sweating it out brings.
Keith Bellows, the late editor of National Geographic Traveler, used to say that “Learning happens between the poles, not just between the ears.” Active traveling is great for kids developmentally in every way. It’s not always easy being on the go while we spend so much time outdoors with kids, but it always gets easier once we start the voyage and settle into the spirit of family travel.
Since we are so active, it means that there really are very few moments of relaxation for us adults because of the type of travel we do with our children, but hey, it sure keeps us on our toes. It means that making sure we have rest days to just relax takes a big importance, and those rest days feel oh so glorious.
We find it a lot easier to stay active when we are on vacation and don’t have schedules that overflow with things to do. When we’re at home, we try to follow these great suggestions recommended by Health magazine, so that we can keep on track of our healthy lifestyle.
The main reasons we love active travel with family are:
- It is a great way to bond. With the girl’s in so many activities, so much time is spent going from swimming lessons, to preschool, ice skating, or whatever else is in between. All year long. Active travel allows us to have experiences with our kids, while having fun and not being distracted. It allows us adults to actually join in on activities instead of just sitting back and watching.
- There are so many options for all ages. We haven’t run into too many problems where the girls could’t participate, and if we do, there’s always the option to take turns if there’s a way to properly entertain the girls with some one-on-one parent time.
- It is a different way to learn about the region. It is more fun to learn about the history and culture first-hand than through a book. We love being able to learn with our girls. Madison is three now, and she sure asks a lot of questions and that makes learning extra fun.
- Active adventures also allow you to see the country differently. We would rather get out, go for a walk and explore our surroundings, while many would rather just see the sights from a distance. We believe that memorable trips don’t happen in a car seat.
Bonus Activity Tip: Stay in accommodations that have a pool
One of the biggest secrets of our success traveling with kids is booking accommodations with a swimming pool whenever we can. On easy days, or a quiet afternoon, a pool is the perfect activity, to keep us all refreshed and get our bodies moving.
