How can you tell if a hotel is right for you?
Choosing A Hotel: What We Consider
What Matters Most?
One of the most daunting tasks of travel for us is finding our accommodations. We usually go for simplicity and the basics when we travel as a family of five. With so many of us, luxury is not often at the top of our list. We go for a clean room, convenient location and kid-friendly (a swimming pool always helps!). If we are on a trip as a couple, we will up the ante a bit in our expectations. Knowing what you are looking for can help you make a more targeted search.
We find it easiest to figure out exactly where the hotel is located compared to where we will be and want to be by finding it on the map. Is it close to any of the big sights or public transportation? Even if it is in the hotel description, a quick visual will give you a better idea if the location is right for you.
Consider The Total Cost
Take a look at the comparables of what hotels offer and for what price. Is the extra cost at a hotel worth the extra special touches you would receive? Is the additional cost of having the hotel in a central and convenient location worth the extra cost to you? What about having access to free wi-fi, breakfast included, and a swimming pool or fitness center?
Keep in mind that the hotel with the lowest price does not always mean that you have found the best deal. One hotel could charge you an arm and a leg for wifi and parking when the comparable hotel nearby offers free wifi and free parking. In some cases, it could work out cheaper to book what looks like the more expensive hotel room, when all extras are considered.
Time Spent At The Hotel
We find that when we travel we usually do not spend too much time at the hotel. We love to be out exploring, so that always factors into our decision. Are we on a relaxing all-inclusive trip, or in a big city with too much to see? If we feel like we will not be at the hotel for much more than sleeping, we will take that into consideration. If we are at an all-inclusive resort, we will feel the need to splurge a little more.
Also, if we are on a road trip with the kids, we may not be able to predict when we will arrive at the hotel. You may need to consider if late check-in is available to put your mind at ease that you will have a room to sleep in.
Read Recent Reviews
Take a look at hotel reviews to get a feel for what to expect. It will help you to get an honest perspective from other travelers who have already tried out the hotel — and could save you a lot of research time. We always read reviews and it has helped us to make some tough decisions when we could not easily make a decision. Make sure you focus on the reviews within the last year – a lot can change in a year. Don’t forget to read the lowest rated reviews as well as they can reveal the hotel’s main problems.
Even the smallest details can make a big difference in the great memories you make on your trip. Before you book your hotel stay, make sure you consider the above tips to find the perfect adventure at your next destination.
