Growing up, it was very common to hear about families taking off on their ‘road trip of a lifetime’ because for families, it was the ‘most affordable’ means of travel.
Many companies still push the road trip vacation, but will this push die down? Technological advances and the desire of the majority of people in this world to constantly be “connected”, taking an airplane allows one to be disconnected for less time and avoids the lengthy drives staring out the window.
Is convenience taking over our wants? Is it because of an increased desire for ‘luxury’ that cannot be obtained from repeated fast food visits and tired eyes from so much driving?
Does the thought of a road trip still excite you? Or, would you rather get to your destination faster?
Why do we prefer an airplane ride over a road trip?
It takes so much longer to get from one point to another. In that time, you’re forced to sit strapped in, staring out the window. Scenery can only keep you entertained for so long. Take an airplane and you would already be at your destination having the time of your life.
Car Wear & Tear
Just bought a new car? It is not new anymore. Hoping to get the most out of the warranty? A long road trip will depreciate it’s value and suck away the warranty faster. Perhaps renting a car would be a good idea, but can get pricey as your mileage and time rented increases.
You’re somewhere you’re not familiar with. Chances of getting stuck in traffic skyrocket when you’re not aware of what areas are busiest at what times. You have no control over how fast or slow traffic goes and how long the next line you have to sit in, that only inches forward. This will also only lead to road rage, making the situation around you worse.
You may not be doing much than sitting in a car and directing it where to go, or being a passenger. However, long drives do take a lot out of you. You get tired, start to feel as if you’re falling asleep and then change drivers to find that you can only have the most uncomfortable nap ever.
You will only last so long before getting sick of your iPod music. It will happen. And, when you do, you’ll have to continually surf for a new radio station playing music you can at least stand to have on.
Considering gas prices even in Vancouver, BC, how much cheaper is it really to drive than to fly? At the moment, the extra time spent would be better used at your destination. As gas prices rise, the value of the money saving machine lowers noticeably.
The Drive Home
Road trips always seem like a good idea … until it is time to drive home.
The number one reason why we will never give up on the ‘idea’ of a road trip…
The feeling of the open road is an amazing feeling. We love to feel ‘free’ and love that at a moment’s notice we can easily change the direction the car goes and our travel agenda along with it.
