First Impressions: Arrival And Check-In

When you first arrive at Henn na Hotel, it looks like a standard modern hotel. There’s nothing on the exterior that hints at the prehistoric experience waiting inside. But the moment you walk through the doors, everything changes.

In the lobby, animatronic dinosaurs take center stage—and yes, they even “check you in” for your stay. It’s one of those moments where you pause and think, is this actually happening? Don’t worry, there are real staff members available if you need help, but the novelty of being greeted and guided by dinosaurs is part of the experience.

The dinosaurs move, blink, make sounds, or talk, adding a fun, interactive element to the check-in process. That said, they’re about as realistic as the ones you’d find at exhibits—so don’t expect a full Jurassic Park moment. Still, they’re more than convincing enough to make you smile, especially when you first walk in.

Rooms: Simple Comfort, Some Themed

Henn na Hotel offers a handful of themed rooms, including dinosaur-themed options and a few other playful designs. However, when we booked at Maihama Tokyo Bay Hotel, none of these were available.

Even the themed rooms are fairly subtle—think themed wallpaper and comforter covers rather than fully immersive decor. If you’re expecting animatronic dinosaurs in your room, that’s not the case here.

Our room was very basic, but it did include one fun surprise: a small interactive robot. You can change the language, ask it questions, and it responds with simple answers. It’s not something you’ll rely on, but it adds a playful, futuristic touch that fits perfectly with the hotel’s overall theme.

Aside from that, the room had everything you’d expect from a typical Tokyo hotel—clean, compact, and functional. Decent beds, a private bathroom, and climate control made it an easy place to relax after a long day exploring the city.

Location & Getting Around

One thing Henn na Hotel really has going for it is the location. It’s a convenient base especially if you’re planning a visit to the Disney Parks, like  Tokyo Disneyland. If you would rather visit Tokyo DisneySea, it is also just a couple train stops away from Tokyo  Disneyland.

There’s a shuttle available to Tokyo Disney, which makes getting to and from the parks significantly easier—especially with kids or after a long day. Not having to navigate multiple trains or transfers is a huge win and adds a lot of value to your stay.

While we stayed at the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel for most of our Disney adventure (that started our trip), we actually came back to Disney for one more evening at the end of our trip before heading home—and this is where the shuttle really stood out. It took us straight to Maihama Station, the closest station to Tokyo Disneyland, and from there it was just a short walk to the park. It couldn’t have been easier, especially at the end of a trip when everyone is a little tired and you just want things to be simple.

Between the easy access to transportation and the added convenience of the shuttle, this hotel works well as both a fun novelty stay and a practical home base.

Dining: Breakfast At The Cafe

Breakfast is included with your stay and served buffet-style in the hotel’s cafe, which features a bit of dinosaur decor to keep the theme going.

Now, to be fair—hotel breakfasts are rarely the highlight of a trip, and we don’t usually expect anything incredible. But this one still fell a bit short. Considering the typical value—around $20 CAD per adult—it’s not the best use of money if you’re hoping for a truly tasty or filling breakfast. That said, it wasn’t all bad—the kids loved making their own ice cream sundaes at breakfast and loved the dinosaur chicken nuggets. It added a fun, interactive element and definitely made the experience more memorable for them (and let’s be honest… dessert for breakfast is always a win when traveling with kids).

Overall, I’d suggest treating the breakfast as a convenient, quick option rather than something to plan your morning around. And if you have the time, local cafes offer a much better food experience for the price.

Fun Hotel Features

Even if you don’t get a themed room, Henn na Hotel still delivers on its quirky concept in other ways:

  • Lobby Dinosaurs: The highlight of the stay. These animatronic dinosaurs handle check-in and create a fun, memorable first impression.
  • Interactive Robot: A small but entertaining feature in the rooms that adds a tech-forward twist.
  • Photo Opportunities: Between the lobby dinosaurs and small displays throughout the hotel, there are plenty of chances to capture fun and unique photos.
  • Family-Friendly Atmosphere: Kids will love the dinosaurs, while adults will appreciate the novelty and humor.

It’s these little touches that make even a basic stay feel memorable.

Tips For A Better Stay

To get the most out of your experience at Henn na Hotel, here are a few helpful tips:

  1. Book Early for Themed Rooms: If themed wallpaper and comforter covers matter to you, you’ll need to book well in advance.
  2. Manage Expectations: The dinosaurs are fun, but they’re more exhibit-style than ultra-realistic.
  3. Take Advantage of the Disney Shuttle: It’s one of the biggest perks of staying here.
  4. Don’t Rely on the Breakfast: It’s convenient, but not a standout—plan to explore local food spots too.
  5. Have Fun With It: This is a novelty stay. Lean into the quirky experience and enjoy it for what it is.

Henn na Hotel in Tokyo is one of those places you don’t book for luxury—you book it for the experience. Being checked in by dinosaurs, interacting with a little robot, and staying somewhere that fully embraces its quirky concept makes for a memorable night.

Even with a basic room and a less-than-stellar breakfast, the fun factor and convenience—especially the Disney shuttle—make it worthwhile. And for families, little touches like building ice cream sundaes at breakfast can end up being the highlight of the stay for the kids.

It’s a little weird, a little unexpected, and definitely something you won’t forget.

And honestly, how many hotels can say they have dinosaurs running the front desk?
