Do you remember the song we were singing? It was “Girls just want to have fun!”

Simple and silly moments like goofing around, singing, and laughing are the ones that are cherished forever. Take an extra moment to savour them.

I took my oldest two for a girls getaway to soak in the hot springs at Harrison Hot Springs Resort. Since we have four kids, I like to give them chances to have their own time away and these two sure feel grown up and special when they can make decisions and choose their own activities sometimes …without their littlest siblings tagging along.

Spending time together always does wonders for our bond. From waking up to incredible views, and rejuvenating hot springs time, peaceful walks in the forest and around the lagoon, we got to create some special memories.

We are all about family fun, and we’re here to help inspire you to create those special memories while exploring the world.

The first thing we do when we arrive at a hotel ro The first thing we do when we arrive at a hotel room…

…. is unplug the phone.

With a toddler that b-lines right for the phone, it’s always a challenge.

We’ve found that unplugging the phone while hanging out in the room is an easy way to prevent littles from accidentally dialing any numbers. Plus, they are easy to plug back in if need be.

We’ll plug the phone back in when we leave the room, or go to bed for the night.

When I asked Olivia how many boyfriends she has, she said “all of them”.

Any guesses how many boyfriends that might be? 🤣

✨Share to spread the word!✨ We were heartbrok ✨Share to spread the word!✨

We were heartbroken in Drumheller.

Visiting the Hoodoos in Drumheller, Alberta was a fascinating and unique experience. These strange rock formations, soft sandstone carved by wind and water into bizarre shapes, are considered a treasure.

Yet the beauty of the Hoodoos area was marred by destructive actions. We saw vandalism and careless carving, even during our visit!

It’s heartbreaking to think about the irreparable damage being done to such iconic landmarks, just for the sake of a few moments of pleasure.

Hopefully through education this senseless destruction can be stopped before it’s too late. It’s up to all of us to protect and preserve these treasures for future generations. Otherwise, they could be lost forever.

@leavenotraceorg and @leavenotrace.ca are excellent resources to learn more about enjoying the outdoors responsibly.

⚠️Waterfall danger ⚠️ - Save for later! ⚠️Waterfall danger ⚠️ - Save for later!

Waterfalls are a mesmerizing feat of Mother Nature, especially when they are raging during Spring snow melt. However, they can be dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions.

Here are some waterfall safety tips to keep in mind before you go:

▪️ Stay on trails and designated paths when visiting waterfalls. If a waterfall has warning signage, listen to it!

▪️Be aware of your surroundings at all times and never stand directly under a waterfall. The force from a powerful waterfall is enough to make your fun adventure turn scary, fast.

▪️Wear the right kind of shoes (with good traction). Waterfall areas can be slippery and proper footwear is essential.

▪️It’s important to practice safety and common sense at the waterfall, even if someone else is not doing so.

▪️Be aware of the risks of falling rocks and debris. Even a small rock can cause significant injury, so always be alert for any kind of falling objects.

▪️It is not safe to cross fast-moving high water as it may cause you to get swept away and hit rocks or drown. The force of water is very strong, and it should be respected.

▪️Please do not attempt to jump or dive off of waterfalls, cliffs, or adjacent rocks into the pool beneath the waterfall. The forceful water currents can cause swimmers to be pushed underwater, trapped under ledges near waterfalls, or stuck in debris which can lead to fatal consequences due to the immense power of water. Or, you can hit something in the water you didn’t expect to be there…

▪️It is not safe to climb on or near waterfalls as the surfaces can be slippery and dangerous.

Flying with little kids - 📌 Save for later! T Flying with little kids - 📌 Save for later!

TRUTH BOMB ….

Flying with little kids is no easy feat. Even if you have kids that are usually great at flying, sometimes there just isn’t any way to calm an upset kid down until the big emotions have passed, despite our best efforts.

We have been pretty lucky on flights, but each of our kids has had their one flight where we felt like we couldn’t help them calm down. And it is traumatizing for the parents too.

You’re trying your best, but you can see the annoyed glares and hear the rude comments …. right when when you feel like you’ve exhausted every option that usually easily calms your kid down.

To make flying with little kids a little easier, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

▪️Bring distractions – Books, games, and toys that your kids will love, so there’s something to do if they get bored. If you need a screen to help, power to you. Do what you need to do to keep your sanity!!

▪️Pack snacks and drinks – Pack more than you think you will need!

▪️Make sure your kids are dressed in layers, and bring a small blanket to cover them up if necessary.

▪️Have patience – When all else fails, just be patient with your kids - they’re just trying to figure out how to handle their emotions in a new environment.

▪️Take a deep breath - The calmer you stay, the better off the whole situation will be.

▪️Poppin’ ears - The change in air pressure during a flight can be painful for infants. To ease the pain, give them a bottle or pacifier to encourage swallowing. Older children can alleviate ear pain by sucking on a lollipop, drinking through a straw or blowing bubbles with a straw.

Flying with little kids can be challenging, but hopefully these tips can help make the process a bit smoother.

Happy flying! ✈️

5 things I wish we knew before traveling with kids 5 things I wish we knew before traveling with kids:

1.	It is okay to push your kids’ boundaries

Pushing our kids’ boundaries can be beneficial for their development. By exposing them to new challenges and experiences, we can help them build resilience, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

2.	Kids Are More Resilient Than They Are Given Credit For

Kids are incredibly strong and capable beings. Children exhibit a resilience that many adults can only admire. It’s important that we give kids the credit they deserve.

3.	Don’t Worry Too Much About What Others Think

It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly worrying about what other people think. We often put so much stock in the opinions of others that we lose sight of our own happiness and well-being. But the truth is, no one knows you better than you know yourself. You are the only person who truly knows what’s best for you and your kids. So why waste your time and energy fretting about what others may or may not be thinking?

4.	Children Have The Right To Travel As Much As Anyone Else

Travelling is an enriching experience that broadens our horizons and exposes us to new cultures and ways of living. It is a right that should be accessible to everyone, including children. By exposing them to different cultures and ways of life, we teach them to be more empathetic and open-minded. We spark their curiosity and help them learn about the world in a way that no textbook can. It’s an essential part of our education and personal growth.

5. Just Do It

Travelling with kids may seem like a daunting task, but sometimes you just need to take the plunge and do it. Exploring new destinations and experiences together as a family can create memories that will last a lifetime.

📍 Save for later - Athabasca Glacier, Alberta 📍 Save for later - Athabasca Glacier, Alberta

This was eye-opening and heartbreaking.

Climate change is causing glaciers around the world to reverse at an alarming rate.

On our last adventure through the stunning Icefields Parkway in Alberta, we stopped at the Athabasca Glacier.

When you take the Athabasca Glacier Trail (1.4km), you’ll pass signage that shows the previous extent of the glacier’s icy end.

Human activities are increasing the Earth’s temperature, leading to faster melting of ice. If we continue with current practices, the planet’s temperature will rise, resulting in the disappearance of glaciers.

We can do better for the earth. We have to. If we keep doing what we are doing, the glacier will be gone.

Once it’s gone, you can’t get it back.

Once you arrive at the Toe of the Athabasca Glacier, you will witness a magnificent view of the glacier and icefield right in front of you. Additionally, you will have a chance to observe people walking on the ice, and you will realize how small they look compared to the massive icefield.

The walk is easy and should take only 20 minutes, and it’s easy for kids as well.

Don’t forget to bring a jacket, even during summer, as the glacial winds are strong and cold throughout the year.

✨You are not allowed to go on the glacier without a guide.✨

How to keep kids motivated during a hike - 📍 Sa How to keep kids motivated during a hike - 📍 Save for later!

Hiking with kids is a ton of fun, but it’s also a lot of hard work. However, don’t let that scare you!

When you’re planning your upcoming adventures, consider these great ways to keep kids motivated on the trail:

▪️Pack essential supplies - Bring the right equipment. This includes items like sunscreen, insect repellent, a first aid kit, a map (download that offline map!), and plenty of water and snacks.

▪️Turn it into a scavenger hunt – Make up a list of items for your kids to find along the way. Or, bring a cleanup kit for a trash scavenger hunt so they can learn to leave the place better than they found it.

▪️Nature journal - Bring a nature journal for them to record observations. A little magnifing glass is excellent too!

▪️Have regular breaks - Give your kids frequent stops for snacks, water and rest so they don’t get too tired during the hike.

▪️Start with short hikes - If you are just starting to learn how to hike with kids, start off with shorter trails that are easier and less strenuous.

▪️Set small goals - Break up the hike by setting milestones or smaller goals to reach along the way such as reaching certain points or landmarks before taking a break again.

▪️Incentivize progress – Reward them when they complete each milestone by giving them treats that they love. ✨Snacks are KEY!✨

▪️Let them lead - Kids love being the ones in charge of pointing out the trail markers!

▪️Lead by example - Positivity is important! It can be fustrating to move at a snail’s pace, but be encouraging and dont let that fustration show.

▪️ Plan the hike together - Ask their opinions on which hike they would prefer to go on. Let them help prepare for the hike.

▪️ Hike with friends - If they have friends around, they’ll want to keep moving as the hike will feel more like PLAY.

✨Okay, okay. I admit, this video clip is a joke. I don’t actually carry all my kids when hiking. 🤣

📍Save for later! - 11 Realities Of Traveling Wi 📍Save for later! - 11 Realities Of Traveling With Kids

▪️Although you can search for affordable flights, deals, and food options and utilize rewards and miles (like we do), expenses such as the additional seats, and larger hotel rooms can accumulate quickly. Traveling with your family will take extra planning and money!

▪️Some people will behave rudely towards your children: being on an airplane or visiting a quiet art gallery or fancy restaurant. Learn to brush it off — you are doing your best!

▪️There will be people who adore your children, sometimes to the extent of crossing boundaries like requesting photos with them, which can become overwhelming.

▪️Sleep-deprived parents may still make rookie mistakes despite doing last minute checks and preparations. You will have to learn to go with the flow.

▪️When you are traveling with young children, you will likely have a bag with you containing clothes that are dirty or wet and probably stink.

▪️When going through airport security or are on an airplane, your kids will (innocently) ask awkward questions or make inappropriate remarks, making you feel nervous that it will make you look suspicious and cause a problem.

▪️Taking children traveling requires a LOT of effort. However, it also helps teach them SO much, like acceptance and flexibility, valuable qualities for navigating the world they will inherit.

▪️ The click of a parent’s seatbelt on a road trip is obviously a signal to your children to drop crap they can’t reach.

▪️During road trips, children will singing songs like “I believe I can fly”, but instead they sing “I BELIEVE I CAN POOP!” over and over and over again.

▪️ Letting kids pack for a trip is a great way for them to learn what it’s like to wear one shoe and the wrong clothing for the type of trip, but they will be completely stocked with bathing suits and random toys.

▪️✨The biggest honest to goodness truth about traveling with kids✨— even though it can get (really) messy at times, it is ALWAYS WORTH IT.

National Parks take all the praise, but National Historic Sites are a wealth of fun, information and learning too!

These four National Historic Sites are designated places of great importance in Canadian history, featuring fascinating (and difficult) stories about Canada’s many diverse cultures, people and events. Some sites even give you the opportunity to time travel and explore the past through interactive exhibits and activities.

▪️Fort Langley National Historic Site - You are able to explore the fur trade, a major industry of the 1800s. Here you can step back in time and view the historic fort as it was when it was first built in 1827. Learn about Coast Salish culture and how this important nation was forced out of their ancestral homeland by colonial settlement.

▪️Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site- Located on the edge of Esquimalt Harbour, this fort is a great place to explore Canada’s military history. Experience life in the old-fashioned barracks and artillery batteries as you learn about the site’s role in defending Victoria, BC from potential threats during both World Wars.

▪️Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site - Construction of this lighthouse began in 1860 and it has been a beacon of hope for many generations. This historic site gives visitors an up-close look at the iconic structure plus interactive exhibits that explore early exploration, navigation, and communication between ships and shore during the 19th century. ✨You can access this historic site with your admission to Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site. Two historic sites in one visit!
