10 ways travel rewires your kids — and you won’t notice until years later. 🌎

1. They stop thinking their way is the only way.
Different foods, languages, customs and ways of living become normal.
2. They become comfortable being uncomfortable.
New places, unfamiliar food, long flights and different routines teach them discomfort passes.
3. They learn that “different” doesn’t mean “wrong.”
They see people living differently while wanting many of the same things.
4. They become better problem-solvers.
Missed train? Wrong turn? Language barrier? They learn to figure things out.
5. They learn to talk to people outside their bubble.
Ordering food, asking directions and navigating airports quietly build confidence.
6. They stop measuring experiences by cost.
A swim, cheap snack, roadside stop or sunset can become a favourite memory.
7. They develop a bigger definition of “normal.”
Tents, foreign hotels, chopsticks and trains eventually stop feeling unfamiliar.
8. They become more adaptable.
Plans change. Weather ruins the itinerary. Someone gets tired. They learn a good day doesn’t require a perfect plan.
9. They start collecting stories instead of things.
Years later, they may not remember what you bought them. They’ll remember the ridiculous train ride, strange meal and hike you almost didn’t finish.
10. They realize the world is theirs to explore.
The world isn’t something to watch from a distance. They can go see it.

You probably won’t notice the rewiring while it’s happening.

But years later, you’ll see it in how they approach new people, new places, hard things and the unknown.

Travel isn’t just about the places they see.

It’s about the people they become because they saw them. ❤️

I’m not trying to have the most perfectly planne I’m not trying to have the most perfectly planned life.

I want the kind of life that gives me stories.

The kind where I can look back and remember the time we got lost, said yes to something completely outside our comfort zone, took the kids somewhere they never expected to go, laughed until our stomachs hurt, or wondered for a minute if we had made a terrible decision. 😂

Because one day, I want to be that little old lady in the nursing home with a lifetime of stories to tell.

“So there I was…”

And then I want to have about 500 more stories after that. 🌎❤️

Travel while you can. Say yes while you can. Make the memories.

Because someday, the adventures become the stories.

POV: on my way, stuck in traffic… 🍄❤️ Ex POV: on my way, stuck in traffic… 🍄❤️

Except this traffic jam comes with Yoshi, Mario music, and a ride straight through the Mushroom Kingdom. 😂

Riding Yoshi at Super Nintendo World felt like stepping inside a video game we somehow grew up and walked right into.

It’s not the biggest or fastest ride at Universal Studios Japan, but that’s kind of the point. You get to slow down, look around, spot all the little details, and actually enjoy the world they built around you.

And honestly, watching our kids experience something we loved growing up? That part was pretty magical. ❤️🎮

If you’re visiting Super Nintendo World, don’t skip Yoshi just because Mario Kart gets all the attention. Sometimes the slower ride is the one you remember.

So many people tell me they’re waiting to travel So many people tell me they’re waiting to travel with their kids until it looks like the version they have pictured in their head.

Usually, it means waiting until the kids are older.
Until they’ll remember everything.
Until they can handle long flights.
Until they won’t complain as much.
Until they can appreciate the destination.
Until they have more money for a luxurious trip.
Until life feels a little easier.

But here’s what I’ve learned after 13 years of travelling with kids:

There is no perfect version of family travel.

Someone will be tired. Someone will complain. Someone will get carsick. Something will go wrong.

And it can still be amazing.

Your kids don’t need luxury hotels or a passport full of exotic destinations.

They need experiences.
They need time with you.
They need to see the world beyond their everyday lives.
They need the chance to try things that are unfamiliar and discover they can handle more than they thought.

Because the version of your family you’re waiting for?

It’s already changing.

The little kids become big kids.
The big kids become teenagers.
And suddenly, the years you thought you had plenty of time for are moving a whole lot faster than you expected.

Stop waiting for family travel to look perfect.

Take the road trip. Book the campsite. Get on the plane. Explore somewhere close to home.

Take whatever budget you have and make the memories now.

We’ll go while they still want to explore the world with us. ❤️🌎

Family travel has taught me that you don’t have Family travel has taught me that you don’t have to make every trip easy to make it meaningful.

Sometimes the kids complain.
Sometimes they’re exhausted.
Sometimes someone gets carsick.
Sometimes the itinerary falls apart.
Sometimes you spend a ridiculous amount of money just to hear, “I’m bored.” 😂

And yet… we keep going.

Because I don’t think the goal is to give our kids a childhood where everything is comfortable.

I want to give them a childhood full of stories.

Stories about the places they’ve seen, the things they tried, the moments they thought they couldn’t handle but did anyway, and the adventures we figured out together.

The older my kids get, the more I understand that time is the one thing we can’t get back.

I’m not waiting for the perfect age, the perfect budget, the perfect itinerary or the perfect circumstances.

We’ll go while they’re still little enough to hold our hands.

We’ll go while they still want us there.

We’ll go while this exact version of our family still exists.

Because the goal was never a perfect trip.

It was a life full of experiences. ❤️🌎

I feel the urgency of time now. Not in a panicked I feel the urgency of time now.

Not in a panicked way. Just in a very real, “we don’t get this version of our life back” kind of way.

The kids are growing. The years are moving. Childhood is happening whether we’re ready for it or not.

And maybe that’s why I’m so unwilling to keep putting life on hold for someday.

Someday when we have more money.
Someday when work slows down.
Someday when the kids are older.
Someday when everything is easier.

Because what if someday comes… and we realize we spent the best years waiting for the “right” time to actually live them?

I don’t want perfect timing. I want memories.

I want the road trips, the missed school days, the messy hotel rooms, the early flights, the hikes they complained about, the places we almost didn’t go because it felt too hard.

Because this version of our family exists for such a short window.

And I don’t want to spend it waiting for life to become more convenient.

We get one childhood with our kids.

I want to be there for it. ❤️

And honestly… I’ll take that as a compliment.

Because I’d rather spend my money, take the trip, book the adventure, make the memories, and actually enjoy my kids while they’re still kids than spend 40 years telling myself I’ll do it “someday.”

We watched our parents work their whole lives believing retirement was when life would finally begin.

But what if you don’t make it there?
(My Mom didn’t)

What if your health changes?
What if your kids grow up?
What if the dream trip keeps getting pushed to next year?

Just kidding. 😂 But honestly, travel has taugh Just kidding. 😂

But honestly, travel has taught me that the people you travel with can make or break the experience.

The “perfect” travel companion isn’t someone who never complains, never gets tired, and happily agrees to everything.
It’s someone who can roll with the chaos, try things outside their comfort zone, laugh when things go wrong, and not let one bad moment ruin the whole trip.
So basically… I’m raising my travel companions from scratch. 😂

And apparently, the training program is going well. 😅

We watched our parents wait for retirement. Millen We watched our parents wait for retirement. Millennials said: absolutely not.

Millennials are travelling like they’re retired because we watched our parents spend 40 + years waiting for retirement… and decided we’re not doing that.

We watched them work.
Save.
Sacrifice.
Put off the big trips.

“Maybe when the kids are older.”
“Maybe when we have more money.”
“Maybe when we retire.”

And then we watched how quickly life can change.

So millennials said, screw it.

Take the trip.
Book the flight.
Bring the kids.
Spend the money.
Take the vacation.

Because what if you spend your whole life being “responsible” only to discover you waited too long?

I’d rather give my kids a childhood full of stories than a house full of things they never needed.

Retirement can be the plan.

But it’s not the only time you’re allowed to live.

And yes, I will absolutely let my kids miss school for a trip. 😂

One of my favourite Japan traditions is omikuji — a fortune you can draw at temples and shrines for around 100 yen.

You shake the container, pull a numbered stick, find the matching fortune, and then hope you like what it says. 😅

And if you get bad luck, you can tie it up and leave it behind. Good luck? Take it with you.

I pulled the “best fortune”, so obviously I’m choosing to believe Japan knew something. ❤️🇯🇵

We did ours at Senso-ji in Tokyo, one of the city’s most famous and oldest temples. The massive Kaminarimon Gate, Nakamise shopping street and beautiful temple grounds make this a stop worth adding to any Tokyo itinerary.

Have you ever done omikuji in Japan?

We were enjoying the view when we suddenly heard s We were enjoying the view when we suddenly heard someone yell, “BEAR!” 🐻

We turned around… and there was a mama black bear and her cub behind us.

On Bear’s Hump.

IN WATERTON.

Talk about an unexpected ending to a hike. 😂

We stayed put and watched from a safe distance, waiting until they had moved far enough along the trail for us to safely make our way back down.

We had gone up for the incredible views over Waterton Lakes, but somehow the wildlife decided to steal the show.

Watching a mama and her cub in the wild, with those views all around us, was one of those completely unplanned travel moments we’ll be talking about for a long time.

Bear’s Hump is only about 2.8 km round trip, but it’s a steep little climb with a huge payoff at the top. And apparently, sometimes the payoff comes with bears. 👀

How have we lived in the Vancouver area all our li How have we lived in the Vancouver area all our lives and somehow never done this? 👀

We finally made our way up the Vancouver Lookout, and it gave us a completely different perspective on a city we’ve spent years exploring.

From 168 metres up, you get 360-degree views across Vancouver, from the North Shore Mountains and Vancouver Harbour to Stanley Park, Gastown, False Creek, and the downtown skyline.

What I really liked was being able to walk around the entire observation deck and actually get your bearings. The information boards help you figure out what you’re looking at, so you can start connecting the landmarks you’ve seen from the ground with the bigger picture from above.

And spotting familiar places from up there is surprisingly fun. There’s something pretty cool about seeing the Gastown Steam Clock, the stadiums where huge concerts and sporting events happen, and other Vancouver landmarks from a completely different angle.

There are also optional 15-minute audio tours you can listen to on your own phone. Bring your headphones or earbuds, connect to the free Wi-Fi, and you can pause and restart the tour whenever you want. No app download needed.

This was one of those moments.
No packed itinerary. No rushing off to the next activity. Just Dad and the kids laughing, relaxing in the hot tub, and enjoying being together.

Being held at gunpoint during a robbery taught me Being held at gunpoint during a robbery taught me how quickly life can change.

Losing my Mom to cancer before she had the chance to retire taught me that you don’t always get the time you think you have.

I realized there is no guarantee that the “someday” you’re saving everything for will ever come.

So I stopped waiting.

I stopped saving all the good stuff for later.

Stopped believing life begins when the kids are grown.

Stopped treating time like something I was guaranteed to have.
