Photo Essay: Visiting California’s Iconic Santa Monica

Last Updated on September 11, 2016

California’s iconic Santa Monica is a city west of downtown Los Angeles and is known for being the end of Route 66. The Santa Monica Pier, a popular and iconic place to visit, is home to the Pacific Park amusement park, historic Looff Hippodrome Carousel and the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.

It’s always fun to take a walk down the pier and explore its offerings, but what we really love the most is getting onto the beach. Nothing beats the feeling of our toes in the sand and the excitement of building sandcastles and getting buried in the sand, with our two girls. The girls definitely take after their Mother when it comes to being a beach bum; it is so hard to get them to leave the beach.

We felt that Santa Monica exemplifies what LA is: outdoorsy, fun and beautiful. Although the beach can get crowded with tourists and locals, we had a great time. If you walk along the beach for just a few minutes, you can find a nice stretch of clean sand to sunbathe and have fun. The beach itself is quite wide and filled with golden sand. The water was cold, and is said to still be cold even in the heat of summer, but we can never resist at least dipping our feet in the water as the waves crash against the shore.

What is one of your favourite places to relax when in LA?
