Reset The Snooze For Better Quality Sleep

Quality Sleep

Over the last several months of staying closer to home, we have really had to take another look at our sleep routines. So much has changed, and being at home so much more started to bring on some unhealthy sleep habits. We needed to get better quality sleep.

With the lines blurred between work and home life more than ever, our sleep started to suffer and we really started to feel the fatigue. We had to stop and assess why our sleep quality was suffering.

It is no secret that stress and sleep just do not mix.  Stress adds to the difficulty we have falling asleep or getting back to sleep after waking in the middle of the night.

We find that how we feel while we are awake depends on what happens while we are sleeping. Our biggest realization has been that it is not always about sleeping more, but teaching our bodies how to sleep better.

Importance Of Quality Sleep

At home or when traveling, good sleep habits are essential to be able to seize the day and make the most of our time. If you’re not getting quality sleep, you will not have the energy to be able to be at your best.

Here is what we are improving on:

Sleep-Wake Schedule

Our sleep-wake schedule went out the window. Spending so much time staying and working at home, really blurred the lines between home and work life. It is all too easy to turn the computer back on for ‘just a minute’ and get lost in a maze of tasks that keep popping up.

First on the list was establishing a consistent sleep-wake schedule. When our circadian rhythm (the internal clock that manages the balance between sleep and wakefulness) is able to work properly, it really made a difference in the quality of our sleep.

Switch Off Screens

We started to get really bad with watching television before bedtime to relax and then trying to get to sleep immediately after turning off the screen. Doing this really interfered with our bodies’ natural release of melatonin. We learned that avoiding bright screens 60 minutes before bedtime really helped our bodies prepare for sleep. We drifted off to sleep so much easier, too. Keeping a dark room during your sleep is of key importance as well.

Daily Exercise

Getting in daily exercise also helps us to sleep better at night. We find that if we keep working towards a goal, it makes it that much easier to get started on that workout each day. Also, once you start a workout, you’ll start to feel good and will want to continue.
