Spokane River Falls & Riverfront Park

Last Updated on September 5, 2015

Spokane Falls is the name of the series of waterfalls and dams on the Spokane River.

The Spokane River Falls are Spokane’s most well-known natural attraction and the heart of Riverfront Park. The Spokane River flows from Lake Coeur d’Alene to Lake Roosevelt. In the early days, the Spokane Falls were a gathering place for the Spokane Tribe Of Indians. Today, the Spokane Falls bring tens of thousands of spectators throughout the year.

We had Bailey with us and were unable to take a ride on the Skyride, but it is said that the best view of the falls comes from the gondola cars of the Spokane Falls SkyRide. Watching the skyride pass over the falls, it was easy to understand how it would be the most spectacular view.

It is said that the best time of the year to view the falls is in early spring when the winter run-off rages.

We enjoyed our stroll through Riverfront Park as we took in different viewpoints of the falls and experienced the nature and wildlife in the park.

During our walk, we found that there is plenty of public art all around Spokane. We found these, “The Joy Of Running Together” to be interesting. The art was created by David Govedare, the Northwest’s most recognized artist for public/outdoor art.

Govedare has also produced the wild horse sculptures that overlook the Columbia River at Vantage, WA (Wild Horse Monument). This particular running sculpture celebrates the Spokane tradition of the Bloomsday Run, the largest timed road running race in the world, established in 1977. The work is comprised of 40 life-sized figures, all posed in the motion of running and give encouragement to runners in the last stretch of the road race.
