For panoramas like this, 360 degrees isn’t enough.
On a little road trip from Vancouver, BC to The Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA we happened upon a scenic view area that also included a brief hike up a hill to the Wild Horse Monument.
The Wild Horses Monument is a piece of roadside art along I-90 in the deserts of Central Washington on a bluff above the East side of the Columbia River. The The 200-foot line of life-size charging horses pays tribute to the wild mustangs who roamed these areas in days past. The monument is referred to as “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies” and is a sculpture of 15 wild horses that has crowned a prominent Central Washington hillside for more than a decade.
The monument is an inspiring sight for travelers along busy Washington Interstate 90 as they enter Grant County from the west. The scene symbolically re-creates the Great Spirit turning loose a herd of wild horses above the Columbia River’s Wanapum Lake.
With views this great, it’s practically a custom to stare.
The scenery surrounding us was surreal. These photos really do not do its beauty enough justice.
Westbound traffic has only a distant view. Take caution and do not walk across the freeway. We suggest that you take a 10-mile loop by driving down to the freeway exit at the east end of the Vantage Bridge, then drive east to the George exit to turn around.
Have you gone on a road trip and have been surprised by the stunning scenery?
